Establishing Myoene kennels

Establishing Myoene kennels

Unfortunately in the 50s and 60s dogs weren’t photographed as they are today. Consequently there are often no photographic records of many great collies who contributed to the Collie Breed. Photographs, of beloved animals, were usually taken by amateur photographers regardless of whether they were in coat or show bloom. We were guilty of this with our dogs and now have to suffer the consequence. But more disappointing is no photographic record at all. If anybody visiting this page has photos they would like to have included please E-mail me.

GLENISSA GLAMOROUS born 16th April 1957 sable and white Reg. 10590
Sire:- Ch. Glendallo Dauntless 68,466 Dam:- Glenissa Glenda 46,575
Breeder:- C.J. Pascoe

Sheena, as we called her, was our first Collie, which we purchased after the death of a much loved Cocker Spaniel who had eventually succumbed to tick poisoning. We had no intention of breeding or showing when we bought Sheena. I had just given birth to our third child, a son, and feeling that children should have a pet we decided to replace Cindy, the Cocker, as soon as possible. The breeder suggested we join the Collie Club and a short time later we entered a show. Sheena came last in a large baby puppy class and I was mortified. To my eyes she looked every bit as good, if not better than most of the other pups. The fact that I had no idea how to show and that she sat during most of the judging didn’t enter my head. I was determined to do better and so I did. Sheena went on to win a couple of challenges and Best Puppy in Show before, due to shock she suffered at a veterinary hospital, she developed a bad case of diabetes Insipidous and had to be put down. She was the most intelligent dog I have known and through her we gained our love for the Collie breed. Unfortunately she never had a litter but we purchased two more bitches from a repeat mating and, having caught the ‘show bug’, were on our winning way.

GLENISSA CONTESSA CD born 7th March 1958 sable and white Reg. 17894
Sire:- Ch. Glendallo Dauntless 69,466 Dam:- Glenissa Glenda 46,575
Breeder:- C.J.Pascoe

Tess was one of several dogs we purchased from Glenissa Kennels and was only shown a few times. Placid in temperament, only an explosive sound would coax her to raise her ears in the show ring. Baiting and other methods used today were not permissible in the show ring in the 50s. It was up to the judge to alert the dog if necessary. One such a noise did occur and on this occasion she was awarded the challenge and Best of breed.
She was a beautifully constructed bitch, sound mover and had a pleasing head and expression. She gained her CD title, but as her litter sister loved showing Tess was retired from the show ring and proved an excellent brood bitch.
We were lucky early in our breeding program that Tess’s season coincided with the Royal Easter Show. Gil and Jen Sharman, from Blackwood’s kennels, were over from SA with their new import Ch. Limerick of Lady Park who was challenge winning dog. We were besotted with him and Jen and Gill, after viewing Tess, allowed us to use him at stud during their visit, despite the fact that the dog had to front up on General Specials Day. It proved a most successful mating, producing, Champions Myoene Charmer, Pride and Joy, Peek a Boo, Playboy and Paladin. Charmer was later mated back to Limerick, a Father, Daughter mating, as we wanted to firmly establish a line back to his great great grandfather, the well known International Champion Lochinvar of Lady Park UK. This proved a successful decision producing the record-winning bitch Ch. Myoene Prima Donna and successful stud dog Aust. & NZ Ch. Myoene Aristocrat. As a companion dog Tess excelled and when the opportunity arose she was placed with a family whereby she became the companion and Seeing Eye of an elderly lady.

Skye differed from her litter sister, Contessa, in the fact that she loved the show ring. She was a glamorous bitch with a magnificent coat. I never considered her to be as sound as Tess but she had more glamour and the necessary qualities to be a winner in the show ring. She won many all breeds in show awards and it was possibly because of her that we developed a keenness for the hobby of showing dogs.

Miniature Dogs Attract Interest In Show Ring,

A breed of dog believed to be the most ancient in the world and which has been in Australia only two years attracted great interest at Portland Show on Saturday. It was the toy dog Chihuahua (pronounced che-wa-wa) imported from Mexico. When fully grown, the Chihuahua weighs only 31b to 6lbs. A puppy at the Show on Saturday weighed only 1½lbs.
The exhibitor of these dogs was Mrs. R. M. Gerardy, of Gordon, who was accompanied by her attractive daughter, Mireille.
Mrs. Gerardy said the Chihuahua, a very rare dog, was first bred by the ancient Aztecs of Mexico. "They are the most ancient dogs on record," Mrs. Gerardy said. "They make marvellous pets and very sharp little watch dogs. They would not stop a burglar, of course, but they would warn you." The 1½lbs puppy, Park Royal Cisco Kid, bred in Australia by Mrs. Gerardy, was judged best puppy in the Toy Group and won the puppy sweepstakes. Another of her Chihuahua entries was Seggiedefi Pluto (imported) aged 18 months and weighing only 3lbs. Besides Chihuahuas, Mrs Gerardy breeds miniature Dachshunds and Boxers. One of her Boxers won 18 Best In Show awards in one year.
Messrs. C. Rigg and L. Gray, of Rydalmere, repeated their success at last year’s Portland Show by taking the award for the best animal in the show with their three year-old Pekinese bitch.
Runner-up for this award was Miss V. Smith, of Glebe, with her cattle dog, Champion Hillsdale Duke.

Members of the Sydney Collie Club had considerable success in the Collie class
.Dr. and Mrs. E. W. Cramer, of Miranda, showed the challenge, reserve challenge, best non-sporting puppy and best non-sporting junior in the Collie class
Dr. and Mrs Cramer’s Glenissa Skyeta took the challenge and the best non-sporting junior awards; Glenissa General won the reserve challenge and Glenissa Contessa the award for the best non-sporting puppy.
Another Collie Club member, Mrs. Betty Johnson, showed the champion challenge and best exhibit with Maran Gay Rob while the best open dog award was won by Mr. D. S. O’Brien, of Balgowlah, with Currawong Count.

NEWS FOR WOMEN

Only well-bred Students

Schools in at Sutherland Oval every Saturday afternoon when pedigree dogs from all over the shire roll up for their weekly Companion Dog and obedience Training Classes.
The "school" came into existence three week ago and the trainer is Mr. C. Scholten, who also holds classes in his home surburb Concord. The organiser is Mrs E.W.Cramer, of Miranda, a member of the Collie Club of NSW and the owner of three collies. She is assisted by fellow collie owners in the Sutherland Shire. The classes are free and all pedigree dogs registered with the RAS can take part.
In the first lessons the owher learns how to handle his dog and the dog is taught to obey the owner’s commands. As the dog becomes more advanced he is taught to retrieve an article belonging to his owner, to jump hurdles and to carry a message from one person to another.
Successful "students" may be awarded Companion Dog or Companion Dog Excellent Certificates, which are recognised by the RAS.
According to Mrs Cramer the dogs thoroughly enjoy the lessons. "When a dog does well we praise him and give him a biscuit as a reward," she said. "The dog thinks it’s wonderful if his master’s pleased and he loves to show off."
Mrs. Cramer’s three collies, Glenissa Glamorous, Glenissa Contessa and Glenissa Skyeta are Students at the school.
